New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education: MindPlus

Gifted Kids opened it Hutt Valley doors at Rata Street School in October 2002 and has been one of the most successful Units nationwide with a core of 15 schools who have supported solidly throughout the past seven years. The Rata Street School site has educated over 700 gifted Hutt Valley students, currently operates 5 days a week and meets 2-3 times a year with an Alumni of past pupils. In 2014 Gifted Kids became the New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education and the programme was renamed as MindPlus.

The MindPlus programme complements and supplements programmes offered in mainstream classroom settings.  Students are referred to the programme based on outstanding academic and/or creative performance or potential ability, identified by their school and/or family and following a workshop with the specialist MindPlus Entry Selection team. The New Zealand Centre for Gifted Education defines a gifted child, as “ one who has the innate ability to achieve at an exceptional level, in relation to his/her same age peers, in one or more areas. This ability may be demonstrated or potential”.

Students receive extension and acceleration in a differentiated programme to suit their learning needs and strength areas. Emphasis is placed on students interacting with like-minded peers to experience talent development, abstract and complex thinking skills, and a conceptual curriculum through the exploration and support of their personal social and emotional development.
