BICYCLES
It is not considered safe for children under 8 to ride to school.  All children must wear safety helmets as required by law.

COMMUNICATIONS
It is commonly known that the greater the partnership and communication between parents and school the greater the probability that your child will be successful.  Your first approach should always be to the classroom teacher.  Teachers are generally available before and after school, although because of meetings, appointments are preferred.   PLEASE do not expect to talk to the Teacher during class time and immediately before school starts.   The Principal is always available for appointments or you can just “pop in”.
IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS PLEASE TELL US IMMEDIATELY

DENTAL THERAPIST (Dental Nurse)
All students who are new enrolments will have their teeth checked by a Dental Therapist. Other students at the school will also have the opportunity to have their teeth checked when the therapists are on site. For emergency treatment please phone 567 7599

FRUIT IN SCHOOLS
Rata Street School is part of an exciting programme called Fruit in Schools.
As part of the programme each of our students will receive one piece of fresh fruit FREE each day.
Once the programme starts, each of our students will be receiving one piece of fresh fruit FREE each day for three years.
All children will receive the fruit unless you advise us otherwise in writing.
Being part of the Fruit in Schools programme means that we will be focusing on four health-related areas over the next few years.  These areas are physical activity, healthy eating, being sun smart and smokefree.

HEALTH NURSE
The Public Health Nurse is available to see your child with health concerns at your request either by phoning 570 9131 or by visiting her Health Clinic which is run at our school every Tuesday morning.

LATENESS
A child needs to be at school 5 minutes before the bell to unpack and prepare for school.  A late child disrupts the learning of all others in the class.   We want the students forming good habits early in their schooling, and you can help by having them here on time.

LUNCHES
We have two systems for lunch orders
MONDAY – THURSDAY Lunch menu ‘Rata Food 4 Pack’ $3.50
Mini Sub Roll, Fruit Pot&Muesli Bar
Orders for lunches must to be the class teacher by 8.50 a.m. with the correct change.
FRIDAY On Fridays the Fundraising team organise a different lunch each week. A notice will go home weekly advising what will be available for purchase.  The cost is $3.50.

Please, provide the exact money in a labelled envelope, order before 9.00 in the classroom, and provide your child some morning tea
For safety reasons we do not allow children to attend the shop during school time.

LOST PROPERTY
Please ensure that your child’s clothes, bags, and lunch boxes are clearly named.  A box of lost property is kept in the corridor.  This is emptied each term.

MONEY
All money sent to school should be in an envelope or wrapped with the child’s name and room number on it.

PARENT HELP
There are many ways in which parents can help in a school.  Everyone who contributes to the school makes it a richer place for all our children. In this booklet there is a form for you to nominate how you want to contribute to school.

PURCHASE OF STATIONARY
Most stationery required is listed on the Class Stationery List.  Stationery can be purchased from the office between the hours of 8.50 a.m. - 9.30 a.m. daily.

RECORD UPDATE
It is extremely important that we are able to contact parent/caregivers. If you change your address or phone number at home or work, please let the off know.

REPORTING TO PARENTS
  1. In Term 1 parents have the first formal opportunity to meet with the teacher.   The purpose of this meeting is to ensure early contact between you both, for you to share information about your child, and for you to discuss and set some achievement goals for the first half of the year.
  2.  At mid-year there is an oral reporting time when your child and the teachers will report on progress so far.
  3. Written reports are sent out in the last week of Term 4.
  4. Parents and children are expected to attend interviews.

SCHOOL DONATIONS

These are set at $35.00 for one child and $50.00 for a family.
Donations are calculated on a pro rata basis according to when your child enters school.  Arrangements can be made to pay these term by term or as you wish, even on a weekly basis.  We do however ask that the total contribution is paid completely by the end of the third term.

    WALKING SCHOOL BUS

At the beginning of last year we sent out a travel survey to all our parents and one of the responses that we had from the survey was an interest in a Walking School Bus. As so many of our chn are very local and many of them walk, it was a great opportunity to start these buses which provide a fun, healthy and safe way for chn to get to school. At the moment there are two buses -  meeting at 8.25am we are meeting on the corner of Rimu and Langford Street and on the corner of Bertram Grove and Naenae Road at 8.25am.
